Professional Development Workshops

STEAM educator PD (for teachers, librarians and community engagement professionals) has been at the core of the Fab Lab mission for many years. I’ve been the lead for nearly all of it. As a maker my specialties lie in paper arts, 3D printing/scanning/modeling, painting, small electronics and the use of games as design tools, though I’ve learned about most other major areas of fabrication enough to teach the basics.

  • Professor H Chad Lane and I presented our work and led a week-long professional development workshop series with Ateneo University in the Philippines. Topics covered included the use of Minecraft for informal learning in STEM, introductory programming with ComputerCraft, computational thinking applications in curriculum design, and 3D printing. Over 150 people came to our opening talk and we worked with over 15 representatives from schools, the Department of Education, and one non-government organization. Read more about it here.   • PD for UI Extension educators at the main Fab Lab. I did similar consulting for the Alaskan Federation of Natives staff for the Fab Lab in Togiack, which was located in a Boys and Girls club.

  • Project MAPLE: MAkerspaces Promoting Learning and Engagement, developed and studied a series of metacognitive strategies that support learning and engagement for struggling middle school students during makerspace experiences.

  • The Mortenson Center at UIUC brought librarians from all over the world to participate in tours and workshops at the Fab Lab. They and many other information professionals participated in PD of all kinds.
