Some notes on my experience, in no particular order. Clearly they don&#8217;t have power users in mind!<\/p>\n<h3>Summary<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>UI needs work but is a good start<\/li>\n<li>Not enough non-MS app support yet<\/li>\n<li>Buggy<\/li>\n<li>Need more ability to customize things<\/li>\n<li>A good OS for tablets, phones, and media centers, not powerful computers<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Look and Feel + Interaction<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Great for everything MS<\/li>\n<li>Poor for apps that are not MS<\/li>\n<li>Give me more power to customize the Metro UI start screen<\/li>\n<li>Show active Metro UI apps in a flyout on the taskbar<\/li>\n<li>Right-side gesture options don&#8217;t work well if you have a dual-display to the right<\/li>\n<li>Why repeat my task bar on both screens?<\/li>\n<li>App-switching on the left of the Metro UI is good<\/li>\n<li>Make folders on the search menu in Metro UI collapsed by default &#8211; I don&#8217;t need a screen full of dutch language manuals for Nero<\/li>\n<li>Provide more windows-button hotkey bindings and shortcuts (customizable??)<\/li>\n<li>Can we integrate the whole control panel into Metro?<\/li>\n<li>Overall performance dropped ~10% according to benchmarks, can&#8217;t feel it though<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>MS Apps that are useful<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Explorer file transfer management is MUCH IMPROVED<\/li>\n<li>Internet Explorer&#8217;s interface is good&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Bing Weather<\/li>\n<li>Built-in PDF and ISO readers<\/li>\n<li>System Rating &#8211; look I&#8217;m no longer the fastest possible!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>MS Apps that need improvement<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>App store &#8211; very little selection, give me the big names<\/li>\n<li>Maps &#8211; way worse than Google&#8217;s, let me manually input my location<\/li>\n<li>Photos &#8211; let me add\/remove sources to my liking, and pick what goes in the live tile<\/li>\n<li>Videos\/Music &#8211; let me control directory sources from Metro UI<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Some stuff doesn&#8217;t launch<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Daemon Tools (SPTD 1.8 can&#8217;t be layered with 4.10 anymore)<\/li>\n<li>PowerDVD 11 (updated to a mid-level patch, probably works with a new one)<\/li>\n<li>Can&#8217;t recognize my Hercules webcam<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;d bet most antivirus won&#8217;t work, I&#8217;m using AVG<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Some stuff crashes<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Creative volume control (crashes at shutdown, works otherwise)<\/li>\n<li>LOL skin changer (.NET framework issues, can&#8217;t import skins)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Weird behaviors that have happened randomly, without repeat<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Drag and drop stopped working<\/li>\n<li>Couldn&#8217;t see files through Windows Explorer<\/li>\n<li>Icon images on Control Panel<\/li>\n<li>Bluray burner disconnected randomly while burning with Nero 10, disc toasted<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Things they need to put back in<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Recently used documents as sub-menus on start items<\/li>\n<li>Make it easier for me to get to sleep\/shutdown\/restart<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Things I haven&#8217;t played much with<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Anything that makes me sign into a MS Live account<\/li>\n<li>MS Email<\/li>\n<li>Skydrive<\/li>\n<li>Internet Explorer compatibility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/duenos.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/customerpreview.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1277\" alt=\"customerpreview\" src=\"http:\/\/duenos.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/customerpreview-819x1024.jpg\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jeffginger.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/customerpreview-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/jeffginger.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/customerpreview-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/jeffginger.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/customerpreview-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jeffginger.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/customerpreview.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m in the midst of testing the Windows 8 Customer Preview.
